Weekend Getaways from Charlotte: 10 Trips Under 3 Hours

One of Charlotte's best-kept secrets is its location. You're roughly equidistant from the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic coast, with charming small towns scattered in between. Here are 10 weekend getaways, all within a 3-hour drive.

Mountain Escapes

1. Asheville (2 hours west)

The obvious choice, and for good reason. Asheville has world-class dining, 30+ breweries, and the Blue Ridge Parkway at its doorstep. Don't miss the Biltmore Estate, the River Arts District, and breakfast at Biscuit Head.

Stay: Downtown for walkability, or a cabin in Black Mountain for quiet

2. Blowing Rock (1.5 hours northwest)

A quaint mountain village with stunning views, boutique shopping, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Blowing Rock attraction and Moses Cone Manor are must-visits. Less crowded than Asheville.

Stay: The Green Park Inn or a vacation rental on the mountain

3. Brevard (2.5 hours west)

The "Land of Waterfalls" — over 250 waterfalls within the surrounding Pisgah National Forest. Excellent mountain biking, hiking, and a charming downtown with local shops and restaurants.

Stay: Cabins near DuPont State Forest

Beach Trips

4. Myrtle Beach (3 hours southeast)

The closest major beach to Charlotte. It's touristy, but the wide beaches, seafood restaurants, and family attractions make it a reliable weekend escape. Visit in shoulder season (May or September) to avoid the worst crowds.

5. Charleston (3 hours south)

Not technically a beach trip, but Folly Beach and Sullivan's Island are 20 minutes from downtown Charleston. Combine historic charm, incredible food, and beach time in one weekend.

6. Wrightsville Beach (3 hours east)

A more laid-back alternative to Myrtle Beach. Clean beaches, good surfing, and the charming town of Wilmington nearby with its riverwalk and film history.

Small Town Charm

7. Greenville, SC (1.5 hours south)

Greenville has transformed into one of the South's most livable small cities. Falls Park on the Reedy, the Liberty Bridge, and a walkable Main Street with excellent restaurants. A perfect day trip or overnight.

8. Pinehurst (1.5 hours east)

Golf capital of the world. Even if you don't play, the village of Pinehurst is charming with its New England-style architecture, spa resorts, and peaceful atmosphere.

9. Chimney Rock (1.5 hours west)

A dramatic rock formation with panoramic views of Lake Lure and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Chimney Rock State Park has trails for all skill levels. Lake Lure itself is great for kayaking and swimming.

10. Davidson (30 minutes north)

Technically a Charlotte suburb, but Davidson's walkable downtown, Lake Norman access, and college-town atmosphere make it feel like a getaway. Great coffee shops, restaurants, and the Davidson Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.

Packing Tips

  • Mountains: Layers (temperatures can swing 20°F between base and summit), hiking boots, rain jacket

  • Beach: Sunscreen, cooler, beach chairs (rentals are overpriced)

  • Small towns: Comfortable walking shoes, camera, appetite
